About the Workshop
Skill level: All skill levels are welcome. Roberta is excellent with beginners and runs her class so as to not hold back more advanced painters.
Materials used: All traditional mediums are accepted except watercolor. This includes oil, pastel, acrylic, and gouache.
Workshop Description: This four-day workshop will emphasize the concept of direct painting, also known as alla prima or premier coup.
Roberta’s instruction will focus on getting a likeness and capturing the unique qualities of each subject. She will encourage students to explore their individual expressions.
Lectures and demonstrations will emphasize a structural understanding of the head and features, and the anatomy of the features will be explained. The class will give a solid foundation to oil painting using chiaroscuro (light and shade), color relationships, warms and cools, planes, edges, values, brushwork, composition, and most of all...getting the soul of the subject. Students will work from a different model each day and each student will receive daily personal critiques.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Roberta Remy began her studies at the Art Students League of New York with Robert Beverly Hale and Louis Priscilla where she got a solid foundation in drawing and anatomy. Later she discovered and delved increasingly deeper into chiaroscuro painting with David A Leffel, Sherrie McGraw, Frank Mason and George Passantino.
Once out of school she supported herself as a free-lance illustrator, working for such noted companies as Macmillan Publishing, Playskool, Ohio Art, Coleco, Original Appalachian Artworks, Inc., and Wm. Carter & Co. During this time, she designed and created the majority of licensed artwork for Cabbage Patch Kids, as well as commemorative dishes for McDonalds. She also illustrated children's books for major publishers and created concept and artistic interpretations for product licenses such as Richard Scarry, Smurfs, Care Bears and Strawberry Shortcake, as well as creating an original line of theme animals for Kendall Co.
Always continuing her studies in fine art, once she began showing her paintings in shows and galleries, art lovers from all over the United States, Europe and Brazil began collecting her work. She is a member of Oil Painters of America and has been a long-time participant in the Annual Miniature Show at the Albuquerque Museum of Fine Art, which is a prestigious invitational in the state of New Mexico. The list of art shows and awards are too numerous to list, but her work has garnered a strong response wherever it has been exhibited. She is a lifetime member of The Art Students League in New York City. She is also loved by her students for her inspiring, informative and patient way of teaching.
Remy was the subject of a November 1999 article in Southwest Art Magazine titled, “In a New Light.” Her work has also been featured in International Artist’s book, “How Did You Paint That? 100 Ways to Paint Still Life and Florals.”
Roberta Remy resides in her new home in Las Cruces, New Mexico where she paints and lives with her favorite model, Beau, her Great Pyrenees mix rescue dog.
