Making the Landscape Paintable with Phil Starke
August 21 - 24, 2023
9 am - 4 pm
$748 + NM sales tax
About the Workshop
Skill level: Advance beginner to advanced painters
Materials used: Phil will demonstrate in oil and acrylic, but pastels are welcome too.
Workshop description: This will mostly be a Plein-air workshop. Lectures will be in the studio, but all painting will be done outdoors weather permitting. In this 4 day workshop, we will focus on simplifying the main aspects of painting a landscape. We want to be able to “see” as an artist, not as a camera. Students will learn how to simplify the subject to large masses and simple values and eliminate the need for too much detail.
We will also learn how to use the color wheel so we can more easily mix a color that suggests the light without trying to copy what we see.
While composition, value, and color are the most important aspects of painting, we also want to understand the technique for painting outside, how to use thick and thin paint, and achieve good paint quality on the canvas.
Phil will do 2 demonstrations a day and work individually with each student.
About Phil
Phil grew up in a military family where he spent several years in Europe and was influenced by the museums and art work that he was exposed to. He attended the American Academy of Art in Chicago where he studied figure painting and drawing.
After living and painting in the midwest for a number of years he and his family moved to Tucson AZ. The southwest, along with Montana, Wyoming, and Colorado was a great inspiration for his painting. Towards the end of 2019, Phil and his wife moved to Georgia.
He looks forward to painting in the southeast and the Appalachian Mountains. Aside from the pure joy and excitement of painting his surroundings, Phil’s goal in painting is to try and reflect some of God’s glory in his creation. Phil teaches workshops around the country and for Scottsdale Artists School, he also teaches several online workshops.
