About the Workshop
Skill level: All levels accepted
Materials used: Kyle will be working in oil, but will accept acrylic and pastel artists.
Workshop description: In this 3-day workshop, students will be working in the field and watching daily demonstrations in order to develop their skills in landscape painting. Students will develop a strong understanding of how light behaves and the way light describes form in a landscape. This understanding will be crucial to developing your concept in a painting as well as establishing the proper shapes and values. Students will also learn how to apply the fundamentals of painting, such as drawing, values, color, and edges to painting en Plein air. Having solid fundamentals will give the students confidence in being able to paint whatever scene they are presented with well.
This class will also emphasize the importance of being deliberate in the decision-making process of painting. In order to make good decisions in painting, there needs to be a clear visual concept to begin with. In this class, students will learn how to take a scene and use that to formulate concepts for painting.
Students will also receive individual attention as they work in the field so the instructor can help address the specific goals each individual has for their work. Therefore this workshop will benefit artists of all levels.

About Kyle
Kyle Ma was born in the year 2000 and developed a love of nature during his childhood. He was drawn to art at an early age and says that painting allows him to express his viewpoint of our world. In 2010, Kyle moved with his family to Austin, Texas where he continues to pursue his love and affection for art.
He enjoys painting En Plein air since it allows him to be immersed in the landscape during the progress of creating. Kyle holds a BS in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin but chose to pursue art as a career. Kyle believes it reinforces the idea of making careful observations and seeking to understand these observations, a skill Kyle feels is extremely important in art.
“Approaching Vermillion Cliffs”
Kyle’s work has been exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions around the country and has received several awards including the gold medal in the 30th annual Oil Painters of America National Show. Additionally, Kyle is a Signature Member of Oil Painters of America, Plein Air Painters of America, and a member of Salmagundi Club.
"Painting, to me, is an extremely passionate experience. I paint as much as I can, and hope that I can communicate with the viewer what I saw and how I felt each time that I pick up a brush."
