About the Workshop

Skill level: Beginner to Advanced

Materials used: Watercolor only

Workshop Description: This will be a three-day workshop on the property of Bluebird Studios where the horse stable and the art studio are housed under the same roof. We will be working in the studio but will have access to study the anatomy of the Cooper’s four horses on-site. There will be some hands-on time for each student to get up close and personal with the horses, doing some simple groundwork if desired. Valerie will take each student step by step through her process of painting the horse.

BONUS ACTIVITY

Later in the afternoon of day 2, we will head to the historic Santa Fe Plaza to tour a few galleries, possibly pop in the Loretto Chapel to see the “miracle staircase” and then go to Herve Wine Bar for a light dinner and wine-tasting!

Watch a Bluebird Chat with Valerie Coe to learn more about the workshop!

About Valerie

I am a self-educated artist and a national-award-winning cowboy bootmaker. In 2013, I began painting, and, from that moment on, felt I had found my true calling. I choose to work in watercolor because it is a thrilling medium. Its vibrancy, spontaneity, and unpredictability challenge me every time I pick up a brush and put paint to paper. Recently I have begun to explore oils, and although they are vastly different from watercolor, I am enjoying the challenge. My paintings reflect what I am truly passionate about - horses and ranching.

When I was ten years old and a friend took me to her family’s stable, I found my true home. Realizing this, my parents bought me a pony, and horses have been an integral part of my life ever since. Several years after earning a master's degree in agriculture at Cal Poly – San Luis Obispo, I found my way to Modoc County, California, where I met my husband Ned. We now have a small cow/calf operation on the edge of the Great Basin that affords me an unending bounty of painting ideas and subjects.

“The Dance”

I believe there is something truly divine in the fit and bond between horse and rider. Horses work for us and with us; they define us. Through my paintings, I strive to capture the relationship between cowboys and their horses and the unique connection that forms when working, day in and day out, as a team.
