About the Workshop
Skill level: Beginner through advanced
Materials used: Oil and pastel (students are welcome to work in either one media or both).
This three-day workshop includes:
A slide presentation and lecture on painting in pastels and oils including people, still lifes, interiors, urbanscapes, and landscapes.
Discussions on painting materials, surfaces, developing your painting style, and working methods unique to pastels and oils.
Demos that emphasize composition, color, and technique.
Daily individual critiques of students’ works in progress.
Additional topics explored include solving common painting problems, experimenting with new approaches to painting, working from photographs, studio lighting, framing pastels and oils, and making use of the internet in your career.
Also included is a lecture on creative ways to promote and sell your art. This course is designed for each student to work at his/her own pace while enjoying the experience of painting with pastels and or oils.
About Desmond
O’Hagan was born in Wiesbaden, Germany, and was raised in the United States. He enjoys working in several media, but his primary focus is oils and pastels. Constantly challenging himself has translated into a fulfilling career in fine art encompassing several one-man shows and participation in group exhibitions in the United States, Japan, China, Canada, and France.
O’Hagan has achieved “Eminent Pastelist” status with the International Association of Pastel Societies and is a member of their “Masters Circle.” He is also a Master Pastelist with the Pastel Society of America and is listed in Who’s Who in American Art. O’Hagan has won several awards in national and international exhibits including the IAPS convention exhibit’s Prix’d Pastel Award and “Southwest Art” magazine’s Award of Excellence (twice) at the “Windows to the Divine” Exhibitions in Denver, CO. He has also won the George Innes, Jr. Memorial Award from the Salmagundi Club in New York City.
His paintings have been the subject of feature articles in numerous national and international magazines including American Art Collector, Southwest Art, The Artist Magazine, International Artist, American Artist, United Airlines’ Hemispheres magazine, Artists and Illustrators (England), International Artist (Australia), and Gekkan Bijyutsu (Japan). He is also represented in five books.
O’Hagan’s art is in public and private collections and museums in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Japan, and China, including the Denver Public Library, Robert and Judi Newman Collection, Museum of Pastel Art (Suzhou, China), Loveland Museum (Loveland, CO), Museum of Saint-Aulaye (France), U.S. Marine Corp (Denver, CO), and Ballard Spahr LLP, (Denver, CO). He teaches workshops nationally and internationally and is represented by galleries in Santa Fe, NM, Isle of Palms, SC, and Denver, CO.

Every workshop at Bluebird Studios includes a mix of complimentary food and beverages. Included are the following:
Ice breaker with non-alcoholic beverages and appetizers to set up the gear and get a briefing of the week.
